Flower Powder Clay Mask
In an earlier post, we shared the wonders of clay and the many benefits of using a clay mask. Now we would like to tell you about the wonderful ingredients in our Flower Powder Clay Mask and how to use it. In addition to White Kaolin and Pink Clay, Flower Powder Clay Mask has several other lovely skin feeding ingredients.
FLOWER POWDER INGREDIENTS:
Marshmallow Root: No, this plant has nothing to do with the white blobs you use to make S'mores! This is an interesting plant that produces a gel like material called mucilage. It coats the skin providing a protective layer that helps the skin retain moisture making it appear plumper. It can also reduce the appearance of fine lines. Marshmallow Root has been studied and used to treat skin wounds and was shown to reduce irritation caused by UV radiation. Also known for its anti- inflammatory effects it can be useful for problem skin like eczema or rosacea.
Bamboo Powder: Bamboo is a gentle exfoliant but also has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It's rich in silica, the third most abundant essential trace element in our bodies and bamboo contains more silica than any other plant. Silica behaves like a glue inside collagen, providing strength and flexibility to our connective tissues. Silica also creates bonds between the protein molecules which is necessary for repair and cell renewal. As a component of collagen, silica plays a part in the healing of burns and wounds. Silica can also give your a skin a glow due to its oxygen and nutrient carrying abilities. In addition, bamboo contains Vitamin C which assists in collagen production as well as protecting the skin from sun damage.
Oat straw Powder: Oat straw comes from the same plant as your breakfast oatmeal! However oat straw is harvested from the leaves and stems while the oat grass is still green and oatmeal comes from the mature seeds. Oat straw is such a wonderful ingredient for sensitive or irritated skin because it is extremely gentle. It is commonly used for itchiness related to dry skin as well as rashes, redness, burns, and eczema. Oat straw has been shown to be clinically effective in strengthening the skin barrier which is often compromised in dry, sensitive or aging skin. It can form a protective moisturizing barrier, which reduces water loss from the skin.
A powerful anti-inflammatory plant. It has been used to treat skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis. Often used as a wellness supplement to keep systemic inflammation at bay.
Another ingredient known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects. It has been used for centuries in medicine and beauty treatments specifically for dry and mature skin. It is the only ingredient in Flower Powder that provides a scent.
Studies have shown that Hibiscus helps to speed up cell turnover, resulting in a more even looking skin tone. Slightly astringent, it helps reduce the appearance of large pores for a smoother complexion. Like Marshmallow Root, Hibiscus has a naturally high mucilage content which helps with water retention in the skin. Mucilage makes a fantastic natural skin moisturiser that is gentle on sensitive skin. It is also rich in Vitamin C known to help lighten skin.
A naturally occurring sulfur containing compound found in plants and humans and a building block for collagen. It can penetrate the skin so it helps other ingredients go more deeply into the skin. One study showed it was effective in alleviating some of the symptoms of rosacea. It is also known to be anti-inflammatory.
Panthenol (Vitamin B5):
Hydrating and penetrating so it holds water deep down in the skin and thus is protective of the skin barrier. It is soothing and anti-inflammatory. It also heals and protects the skin so is often used in products for helping with skin conditions and wound healing. Helps to stimulate cell formation and accelerates cellular turnover.
Rose, known for its heavenly scent has been studied has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Rose contains Vitamin C which helps with brightening skin and AHA which is a gentle exfoliator. It is is also quite soothing to irritated skin.
Contains provitamin A, C and Vitamin E. Very helpful in protecting against inflammation. Vitamin C helps brighten skin and soothes irritation.
WHAT YOU WON'T FIND IN FLOWER POWDER:
Most ready to use clay masks contain at least one if not more preservatives. This is necessary because once water, aloe vera or any liquid is added to a clay mask it will begin to grow bacteria within a matter of a few days. The clay can absorb most of the preservative if added so it may take 3-5 different preservatives to adequately preserve the mask. Now there is nothing wrong with using preservatives in natural skincare and its necessary in any product containing water such as a lotion or toner. However, the preservative is needed only to prevent bacterial growth and doesn't provide any skin loving benefits. With a dry clay mask like Flower Powder, water isn't added until you are ready to use it, so there is no need for a preservative. As a result, all the ingredients in your lovely bottle of Flower Powder are skin nourishing and chosen to deeply cleanse, soften and give your skin a radiant glow!
STORING YOUR CLAY MASK:
A clay mask should not be stored in metal containers or mixed with metal spoons because contact with metal can lead to the loss of some of the beneficial properties. Instead, mix and store your mask in wood, glass, or ceramic clay.
It is very important to keep clay dry. Make sure the lid is on tight and never allow water into container. Store in a closed cabinet not your shower, to prevent moisture from humidity getting into the bottle. As mentioned above, if water is introduced into your bottle of mask, it will grow bacteria very quickly.
USING YOUR MASK:
In a small bowl, add 1/2 tablespoon mask with an almost equal amount of filtered water. Mix well and apply to clean skin. Leave on 5-15 minutes. When removed, mask should be partially but not completely dry. If allowed to dry completely it is possible to dehydrate/irritate skin. Remove mask with cool-lukewarm water or a soft wet face cloth. Some skin redness upon removal is normal and usually resolves within an hour. Follow with your favorite toner and moisturizer or serum.
